SRGC AR-15 Build Party!

ScopedIn is hosting an AR-15 build party for members of the Sunnyvale Rod & Gun Club. This is a great way to learn how to build up an AR-15 lower. Mike Zimmers from ScopedIn will furnish the necessary tools, the workspace and his (basic) knowledge in how to assemble an AR-15 lower receiver. This will also be an opportunity to view some of the premium AR-15 components available on the market.

Mike Zimmers’ house
When: Saturday, August 16th 2008, 12:00 noon
Where:
20277 Pinntage Parkway

  1. a stripped lower receiver

  3. a stock assembly
  4. your favorite beverage and/or snack (optional)

Build Party FAQ:

Q: how hard is it to build up an AR-15 lower?
A: it’s not tough. It’s considerably easier, however, if you have a few specialty tools and the assistance of someone who’s done it a few times.

Q: how much will my lower cost?
A: figure on about $250 for a basic lower. You can spend a lot more, if you want to add a match-grade trigger, a fancy stock, or other frills.

Q: is this legal?
A: it is if you do it correctly. A legal AR-15 lower is simple to build, but the rules are somewhat complicated to explain.

  • First, the lower receiver is the controlled component; you’ll have to buy this from an FFL and go through the 10-day waiting period to get this.
  • You’ll also need to make sure that you DON’T buy a lower that’s on the Kasler list. This shouldn’t be a problem, as illegal lowers are generally tough to find anyway.
  • Finally, you should plan to build a legal configuration. The easiest way to do this is with use of a Prince bullet button; you can buy one of these here.

Update: the maker of the Bullet Button has agreed to furnish a small number of these to us at a discount. Let me know if you’d like me to order one for you.

Another viable approach is to use the unique stock available from carifles.com. I have one of these stocks, and find it very comfortable and practical.

Q: whose lower, LPK and stock should I buy?
A: that’s really not for me to say. I will say that, in my limited experience with various manufacturers, I haven’t been able to detect significant differences in quality, either in stripped lowers or in LPKs. As far as stocks, personal preference reigns supreme, though there are some legal issues you’ll need to keep in mind (for example, if you get an adjustable stock, you forego the right to a detachable magazine).

Q: where can I get more information?
A: there’s plenty of information online. I recommend strongly that you get acquainted with Calguns.net if you haven’t yet done so. There is an absolute wealth of information there. In particular, if you want to learn more about California-specific criteria for illegal “assault weapons,” take a look at this chart.

Please RSVP to Mike by August 1st.

    Good show.

Don’t know yet if I’ll be in town and able to make it. Will advise as soon as I know.

In any case, I applaud you for doing this.

    Best wishes.

  • Greg McCartney

    Looking forward to it.

  • Alan Hantke

Tentative plans are to attend…. Looking forward to the opportunity.

    Thanks!

  • Mike Z

I just spoke with the maker of the Prince Bullet Buttons. He has agreed to furnish these, at a discount, directly to us for the build party. I don’t know the exact price, but it will be competitive with any price you could get it for elsewhere.

I plan on placing the order with Darin on July 15th. Please let me know by then if you’d like for me to get one for you.

  • Dana Wyse

I plan to be there, but am hoping not to be late as I compete in the 22 benchrest competition that morning at the club.

  • Charles Netherby

    Mike, this is GREAT!!!

  • Charles Netherby

Mike, this is GREAT!!! I wish to attend yet I do not have the parts as yet. May I attend anyway?

With best wishes to you and to yours, I remain truly,
    C. R. Netherby

Charles: of course you may attend. All members are welcome. I look forward to seeing you there.

  • John Yarborough

    Sign me up,

I have all the parts. I just have not screwed them together yet.

  • Mike Z

Good to have you, Skippy…but you can leave your screwdrivers at home. No screws are necessary in this assembly.

I plan to attend also but need to get the parts. Thanks!

  • Dan Wilson

    I’ll be there!!

Mike, thanks for offering to help us all out with this, I’m really looking forward to it!

Enjoyed talking with you this evening, Mike. I think this build party is a great idea! Count me in. I’ll need a Bullet Button, so please add me to that list too.

    Thanks,
    -Dave

  • Dana Wyse

I know I already told you, but just want to confirm that you have me down for a bullet button. Thanks.

  • Trent Gilliam

This is cool! I have built two lowers and have number 3 just waiting for the party.

  • Pat Mc Guire

I would like to attend, I am working on getting all my parts. Please put me down for a bullet button. Thanks

  • Jonathan Disher

Technically you need a screwdriver to attach the handgrip, but that’s the only screw. Possibly a stock onto a buffer tube :)

  • Aaron Schooley

Regrettably I will now be out of the country on the 16th. Please give my bullet button to my roommate Dan and I’ll have my own build party at home later.

    -Aaron

  • Anthony Bologna
