Summary
The Winchester Platinum Tip ammunition simply did not fare well in this test. The smooth-sided, non-cannelured bullets lasted only 7, 10 and 10 firings before succumbing to our creep threshold. The effect on velocity was, in a word, unpredictable: two of the three test cartridges showed dramatically reduced velocity, while the third had no such effect.
There is no doubt that this ammunition is an excellent choice for a hunting cartridge, but in a backup weapon, I’d prefer to use something else.
